YouTube thumbnail size and dimensions (2026 guide)

The TubePrep Team · · 4 min read

The correct YouTube thumbnail size is 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, saved as a JPG, PNG or GIF under 2 MB. That one sentence answers most searches, but a lot of thumbnails that technically meet it still look blurry, cramped or clipped once they’re on YouTube. This guide covers the numbers and then what to do with them.

What is a thumbnail?

A thumbnail is the small preview image that stands in for a video, page or file before anyone opens it. The name comes from the idea of an image “the size of a thumbnail”.

On YouTube, the thumbnail is the image people see in search results, on the home page, in the suggested-videos column and when a video is shared. Together with the title, it decides whether someone clicks. YouTube picks three frames from your video automatically, but once your channel is verified you can upload a custom thumbnail, and almost every successful channel does.

If you remember nothing else, remember 1280×720, 16:9, under 2 MB.

Why 1280×720 and not the minimum

YouTube accepts thumbnails as small as 640 pixels wide, and on a phone you might not notice the difference. But the same image appears on desktop home pages, big monitors and TV apps, where a 640-pixel thumbnail is visibly soft. Upload at 1280×720 and YouTube produces sharp smaller versions for every surface.

Designing larger is fine too. Many designers work at 2560×1440 (exactly double) and export down to 1280×720. Avoid odd sizes like 1366×768 or 1200×700: anything that isn’t 16:9 gets letterboxed or cropped, and resizing from a non-multiple is where small text goes blurry.

The other thumbnail sizes YouTube creates

When you upload a thumbnail, YouTube generates several smaller copies for different parts of the site. These are also the sizes you’ll get from a YouTube thumbnail downloader:

NameDimensionsAspect ratio
maxresdefault (HD)1280 × 72016:9
sddefault (SD)640 × 4804:3 (letterboxed)
hqdefault (High quality)480 × 3604:3 (letterboxed)
mqdefault (Medium quality)320 × 18016:9
default (Small)120 × 904:3 (letterboxed)

The HD version only exists if the original was at least 720p, which is one more reason to upload at full size.

Keeping the file under 2 MB

The most common reason a thumbnail upload fails is file size, not dimensions. A 1280×720 PNG containing a photo can easily go over 2 MB. The fix:

  • Export as JPG at 85–95% quality. It’s visually identical and usually 200–600 KB.
  • Keep PNG for flat graphics with few colours, where it compresses well.
  • Don’t shrink the dimensions to get under the limit. Reduce the quality slightly instead.

Size isn’t the whole story: the safe zone

A thumbnail can be exactly 1280×720 and still lose its most important part, because YouTube draws its own interface on top of it. The duration badge sits in the bottom-right corner on almost every surface, a progress bar runs along the bottom for viewers who’ve started watching, and mobile layouts add more overlays.

Keep text, faces and products roughly 8% in from every edge and clear of the bottom-right corner. We go deeper in the bottom-right corner of your thumbnail isn’t yours, and you can see exactly what gets covered by testing your design in the free YouTube Thumbnail Checker before you upload.

Design at the size people actually see

Most viewers see your thumbnail at a fraction of 1280×720: about the width of a matchbox on a phone. A few habits that follow from that:

  • Three to five words of text, maximum, in a heavy font with strong contrast.
  • One focal point. A face, an object or a result, not all three competing.
  • Zoom out to check. Shrink your preview to around 320×180 (the medium-quality size). If you can’t read it, neither can your viewers.

Thumbnail sizes for other platforms

If you’re reusing the same artwork elsewhere, these are the usual starting points:

PlatformRecommended size
YouTube video1280 × 720 (16:9)
YouTube Shorts / Instagram Reels / TikTok cover1080 × 1920 (9:16)
Facebook video1280 × 720 (16:9)
Link preview image (Facebook, X, LinkedIn)1200 × 630 (1.91:1)

Platforms change their layouts from time to time, so check each one’s help pages before a big campaign, and always keep the important parts of the design in the centre.

Quick checklist before you upload

  1. Exported at 1280×720, 16:9.
  2. File is under 2 MB (JPG if needed).
  3. Text is short and readable at small sizes.
  4. Nothing important under the duration badge or along the edges: test it here.
  5. The thumbnail and title say different things and work as a pair.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best YouTube thumbnail size?

1280×720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube requires a minimum width of 640 pixels, but 1280×720 stays sharp on large screens and TVs. If you design at a larger size, use an exact multiple such as 2560×1440 and export the final file at 1280×720.

What are the YouTube thumbnail dimensions in pixels?

The recommended dimensions are 1280 pixels wide by 720 pixels tall. The minimum is 640 pixels wide, and the aspect ratio should be 16:9.

What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?

2 MB. If your thumbnail is larger, export it as a high-quality JPG instead of a PNG rather than lowering the resolution.

What file formats can I use for a YouTube thumbnail?

JPG, PNG and GIF are accepted. Animated GIFs only show their first frame. JPG is usually the best choice for photo-heavy thumbnails because it stays well under the 2 MB limit.

What is a thumbnail?

A thumbnail is the small preview image that represents a video, page or file before someone opens it. On YouTube, it is the image viewers see in search results, on the home page and in suggested videos. Together with the title, it's the main thing that decides whether someone clicks.

What happens if my thumbnail isn't 16:9?

YouTube fits it into a 16:9 frame, which usually adds black bars or crops part of the image. Square or vertical images look noticeably worse in the feed, so always export at 16:9.

What size are YouTube Shorts thumbnails?

Shorts are vertical (9:16, for example 1080×1920), and in the Shorts feed the cover is shown vertically. Where Shorts appear in regular 16:9 spaces such as search results, YouTube crops the frame, so keep the subject and any text in the centre of the frame.
